Rachel asked about what happens re uniting mothers and babies after
Caesarean births.
The majority of births where I work are Caesarean. After a quick peek at
her infant, the baby is examined by a paediatrician and then brought to the
nursery in an incubator by the paediatrician, a midwife and the father.
Mother is taken to recovery for about half an hour then comes to the ward.
She is still pain-free from the spinal anaesthetic.
Baby is then taken immediately to mother for a breastfeed. Baby is usually
dressed by this stage and wrapped in two warm towels. Given half a chance,
I take the naked baby to the mother and let the skin-to-skin contact weave
its magic. One or two of the other midwives are now leaving the babies
undressed if they know I will be taking baby out. Small steps!
I know of another hospital in Cape Town that places babies skin-to-skin in
the operating room. Only one doctor supports this so far, but it's an
exciting possibility ....
