Naomi asked about donor milk protocols and milk banking in Islamic
countries.
Here in the UAE, and in most Islamic countries, pooled donor breastmilk
banking is not possible.
If a mother feeds another mother's baby for 5 times or more (and they must
be full feeds-the baby must come off the breast satisfied) then that child
is considered the "milk-brother/sister" of the breastfeeding mother.
This means that the two children are effectively brother and sister and so
cannot marry, and nor do the usual protocols of segregation/covering etc
apply when they are adults.
Occasionally a private arrangement will occur between 2 families. Pooled
donor milk banking means that families cannot identify the milk
brothers/sisters.
