Baby has no pacifier, no bottles. Mom nurses on demand, but baby wants it
steady and if she stops, the baby shrieks. If she doesn't stop, the baby
spits up all over her and then keeps nursing - sometimes for several hours
on end.
the colicky and gassy symptoms of this post made me think of dairy 1st, too.
but this particular issue really jumped out at me.
w/ my second baby, he was very alert, sensitive and slightly more high-needs
than my 1st. he liked to nurse CONSTANTLY - for hours on end, literally. he
would nurse for an hour, spit up all over me, latch back on and then begin
fussing and crying and shrieking after a few sucks. in order to settle down and
nurse to sleep, he found a way to let the milk run out of his mouth as fast as it
flowed in. i would have to put a full sized bath towel on my lap for his
night nursings. he was also constantly sucking his hands and fists. i finally had
a lightbulb moment and wondered if he just wanted to suck and not necessarily
get the milk. i reluctantly introduced a pacifier. it was exactly what the dr.
ordered. he was now able to fall asleep w/out all the frustration at the
breast.( i gave it after he'd nursed for long enough to be full and begin getting
fussy at the breast.) as soon as he stopped actively sucking on it, i took the
pacifier away. if he was actually hungry, he would spit it out after a few
sucks. he only used it from about 10 wks - 4 mos, but it made an immediate
difference in his frustration levels. he was a much happier baby for it. i think he
was just a more high strung baby that needed to relieve tension through
sucking and didn't want all the milk. his gassiness also subsided w/ the pacifier
use, i b/l this was due to him not overfilling his belly constantly.
anyway, i know pacifier use can be controversial and i never even considered
one for my 1st baby, but it saved me untold amounts of stress considering the
ped had assured me i had a colicky baby that should be switched to formula
with my 2nd.
