Now I'm going to have to read the smoking and iodine in breastmilk
article. My first response is, so what since we have more than enough
iodine, but I really must read to find out the so what.
In the US we actually have an excess of iodine in many places because all
of our dairy products are from milk that has passed through equipment that
was sterilized with iodine. You can absorb iodine from vaginal douches.
In developing countries iodine deficiency is still a very real problem, but
salt iodization has been reducing it.
Best, Susan Burger
PS. I spent quite a bit of time on iodine deficiency disorders - had
wanted to do my doctoral dissertation on the topic because I lived in an
area of Africa where >80% of the population had goiters and cretinism was a
problem. Even in those who do not have overt cretinism, the IQ is
typically about 10 points lower than in populations where iodine deficiency
is not prevalent.
