Thanks Katherine, for sending

On my website I have a brief mention of this data wrt
stress and have received some very hostile responses
to it. Clearly there are people who have a lack of
understanding of "correlation" so they attack me for
"suggesting" that they will abuse their child if
bottle fed when I merely want to say, "mothering is
hard. Make it easier for yourself and breastfeed."

This statement from the article is interesting to me:
"A lot of people assume that it's the milk that is the
key factor in breastfeeding benefits, but that may not
be the case. It may be more the actual contingent
interactions from day to day, hour to hour throughout
the day between the mother and the baby that makes the
difference," Dr. Strathern. A neighbor told me not
long ago that her granddaughter had become
disinterested in nursing when she was 5 mos old and
so, she was done! End of story. Shocked, I said
something about the parents needing to treat
breastfeeding as more than just about food. My
neighbor said, "what else is it?" (not in a way of
seeking information, but as "sheesh, of course it's
just food, doofus.") Since then I've been trying to
come up with analogies....

"if breastfeeding is just about the milk, bicycling is
just about making your feet go around in circles."

"if breastfeeding is just about the milk, birth is
just about stretching the perineum."

"if breastfeeding is just about the milk, sex is just
about fertilisation."

I'm not too happy with any of those- maybe I just
can't do analogies, I dunno. Any ideas here?
