I would consider a weight gain of 4 to 5 ounces a week, given the baby's
good development, etc. to be just fine. I know I have often shared the story
of my daughter Lisa who was born weighing 8 pounds, nursed well from birth
and never lost any weight at all, but never gained more than about 4 ounces
a week. She did move down through the percentiles on the growth charts, and
ended up weighing 17 pounds at one year. BUT - she was healthy, very active,
advanced in her development (walked at 9 months, for example). She also
nursed very frequently - almost continuously as I recall! Lisa is 25 years
old now and is still a petite person - she's 5'2" and weighs about 100
pounds.
