I was curious about someone having a policy to "keep a baby crying" for blood
work  so I asked my sister who is the head lab tech at a hospital if they
have a protocol to "make" babies cry. Her response was that they used heel
warmers to increase circulation to the area and if a baby happens to cry that
"helps" as crying increases blood circulation. But they do NOT purposely try and
keep babies crying and soothing the infant is fine.  I personally have nursed
during these types of procedures without someone jumping on me for it. Again,
it's the uninformed lab personnel who makes an assumption that one "must" do
something because somewhere along the way a misinformed phlebotomist was told that
it "helps" and she takes it as protocol.
