Jake, you ask if menopause has an effect on lactation. I have known a number
of women who called themselves "menopausal" who were able to breastfeed just
fine. Menopause is a low-estrogen condition, and so is breastfeeding.
However, sometimes "age" rather than "menopause" may have an impact. For most
women, menopause comes when they are "older." (Approaching this condition/age
myself, I hate the term "older" but can't think of any I necessarily like better!)
As women age, the breast tissue becomes less dense. The ductwork can
disappear and be replaced by fatty tissue, even if the breast size itself does not
change. The lack of ductwork can have an effect on the amount of milk the mom
can produce, more than her hormonal state at that time. But, as I said, I've
known older moms who breastfed just fine, so it is not a given that an older
mother will have problems.
