The doctor asked if she was exclusively bf, upon my saying yes
she then proceeded to tell me that Sariah(my daughter) needed Vit D to
prevent rickets. The AAP said this she told me. She asked what I thought and
I told her that I didn't agree with what she had said, she laughed and said
that she could tell by the look on my face, then proceeded to say under her
breath that sunlight would suffice.
I'm not surprised. I recently read the article "sunlight deficiency" in Leaven
it was great. Lawrence Gartner MD has published a statement recommending vit
suppl. in BF infants, why, b/c they still recommend limited UV exposure and
sunscreen use. I also disagree, sun exposure can be done in moderation with out
ill effect. I too as a mother do not want to force a horrible tasting liquid
down my daughters throat everyday for no reason! How about tooth staining?
I just got the new edition of Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics-- the main
reference guide. Just out of curiosity I wanted to see how much they had in
there about breastfeeding. The chapter was written by someone who did NOT have
IBCLC after his name, and quite frankly I wonder how much experience he really
had with breastfeeding, since it seemed to be riddled with misnomers, mistakes,
and myths! I had a hard time even getting past the fact that they chose to
hyphenate breast-feeding, isn't it one word? No pics, diagrams or flow charts!
whole section was 3 pgs (out of a >2000 pg text), not a single IBCLC among the
hundreds of authors throughout the text. At first it gave the lip service
that "breast is best" but in the next section titled "formula feeding" he says
that the growth is virtually the same so it is not just adequate but nowadays
with advancements, an excelent substitute and mothers need not feel guilty
about their choice! I was underlining as I read since I wanted to excerpt this
ridiculous text for all of you, but it got to be so much I could never put it
all here! I don't even have it in front of me but another thing that come's to
mind is how he says the infant should be in a semi seated position to avoid
regurgitation and erudition (talk about teaching side lying positions!) He also
states that they should be put on a schedule so that the family can get back to
normal functioning, and something about giving the mother "freedom" He thinks
that most infants will be sleeping thru the night by 3-6 wks? Did this guy have
any children of his own? But what is a young pediatrician to think- they are
told to learn this text book! I'm just in total shock! This is mainstream
pediatrics, this is why other pediatricians also think I'm wrong when I suggest
otherwise! Does evidenced based medicine apply to everything BUT infant
feeding!
Anyway, I want to wish everyone a Happy Sweet New Year. I just got a story
published on www.breastfeeding.com and if there are any IBCLC's in Northern NJ
who would like to come work in my new office (on a comission basis please email
me privately)
Amy M. Kotler, M.D.
