Any suggestions for how to educate the masses in the hospital? Anyone show
the video I mentioned or another like video to parents and nurses?
Sally,
I have been showing part (it's too long to show all of it) of The Happiest
Baby on the Block video in my childbirth classes. I give them a handout that
summarizes the 5 S's & includes info about Dr Karp's web site & book. I hadn't
thought about showing it to the nursing staff. That might be a good idea. I
think that it would save some of the babies from the "dreaded bottle of formula"
that so many moms & nurses think the babies need.
I have used his techniques on my youngest grandson who had colic. He is now 5
months old. I have also used it with some fussy babies on the mother-baby
unit. It works like a charm. People are very impressed with it. Parents go home
so confident that they will know how to stop their baby from crying--that seems
to be a big fear that parents have.
>>We do have "Baby's Second Night" handout at my workplace and I give that to
parents alot. Parents frequently say to me after reading it "this is exactly
what is happening". <<
I have had the same experience with the 2nd night handout. We give that to
all our breastfeeding moms when we make rounds & give out our guide to
breastfeeding & feeding log. I think that one helps to avoid some of those bottles on
the 2nd night.
