My favorite is that for some reason in the US at Christmas we burn
"luminaries". I've always found the idea of burning nobel laureates and other
important people to be a excessive to celebrate the holiday. I suppose it
harkens back to the good old days when our ancestors made "straw men" and
burned them on holidays, sometimes with real men inside. But human sacrifice
no longer being in vogue, now we only burn an occasional luminary at
Christmas.

On the other hand we could just stick with the perfectly good Spanish term
"luminarias", which I'm pretty sure means small or little light.
