Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a Coxsackie virus. The hand
and foot rash is faint and fleeting, often not noticed unless mom is
specifically looking for it. The mouth blisters can be very painful.
There was a small outbreak of this in a local hospital nursery this past
summer; I saw a three day old who had been feeding well for first two
days go on a "nursing strike". Mom thought there was a bfing problem and
came to see me; with no obvious reason for strike, I encouraged mom to
pump and cupfeed. Later that day, while cup feeding, mom noticed
blisters in baby's mouth which had not been apparent earlier in the day.
When ped saw baby the next day we learned of the outbreak. Ped was
impressed that mom was keeping baby hydrated as many other babes were on
IV's in hospital. Mom continued skin to skin and cup feeding until baby
went back to breast over the next couple of days, and bfing proceeded
normally from there.
