We also do this in our PICU and Special Care Nursery, but only if moms do not have enough breast milk for a feeding, NOT because we think it improves digestion!  I must have missed this on the listserv if someone posted this.  It doesn't make sense.  I would think it would DECREASE the rate of digestion in the infant.  You also asked about "stretching" out the benefits of the breastmilk by adding some to formula feedings as the mother's supply runs out.  I have done this before and try to give the infant some protection from the breast milk as long as possible.  Hopefully, feedings can be back to 100% breastmilk as the mother's supply increases.  I am also trying to get donor milk approved for use in our hospital so that I won't have to supplement with ABM for the breast babies.
