After reading the responses about leaving the baby on the breast for their
lab draws, I started my rounds and wondered if this could be done in my
unit. I know many of our techs would bring the baby to the nursery because
they "didn't want to upset the parents". So soon after helping one of my
momslatch-on, in walked one of our young lab techs to do our Ohio Dep of
Health metabolic and supplemental screening tests that require alot of
blood. I asked her if she could do the tests in the room and she said
yes. Then I asked her if she would do it while the baby was nursing. She
stopped for a moment and before she said anything, I started my speech
about the value of nursing during painful procedures etc, and she said she
had just read about a study that said that nursing/breastmilk helped the
pain etc. We then had a great conversation about nursing. I must say, I
never expected that response, so now I can pass that on to the next tech
who may be reluctant. It made my overwhelming day a whole lot nicer!
