I worked with a mother a few months ago who also had severely inverted nipples and then had a very low supply. She had an induction/then C/section, but started pumping to bring out nipples and putting the baby to the breast within a few hours after delivery. After trying many alternatives, we finally got the baby nursing with a shield. The mother never did have much colostrum, so she was pumping after feeds while finger feeding a little formula afterwords "waiting for her milk to come in." Her milk never really came in despite having the baby at the breast, albeit with a shield, pumping, using fenugreek and blessed thistle. After about 5 weeks, the mother got frustrated with all of it. She is a single mother and going back to work, and gave it up. It was one of the most frustrating cases I have ever worked with. I was wondering if their was some connection with the severely inverted nipples and low supply??? I couldn't find any relationship in my reading, but have wondered about it ever since. Has anyone else ever seen this?
Quick reintroduction--my name is Anne Nans. I am an RN/IBCLC here in Fredericksburg, VA. I was off Lactnet for over a year, but signed back on a few weeks ago and am loving the exchanges. I also have 4 1/2 year old triplets who breastfed beyond a year and a 2 1/2 year old who still nurses in the morning. I work part-time at our local hospital.
