My favorite story about nursing in public: When my 3rd was born, my
oldest was going for a weekly treatment. The 2nd was happily
playing in a playroom while I waited in a waiting room with other
parents. The baby was 6 days old the first time I took him there
and we were there once a week. Of course he nearly always nursed at
least once during the time I sat in the waiting room. I never went
out of my way to be either discrete or obvious, I just nursed him.
If a guy was sitting next to me, I would turn my back while getting
baby latched, but that was the only concession I made. Many of the
same parents would be there at the same time each week.
A couple months later, a mom came in with a screaming baby trying to
find a place to warm a bottle. I turned to the gal next to me (who
had occupied that space on a number of occasions) and said, "I'm
sure glad I don't have that worry!" She turned to me with a shocked
expression and said, "Surely he's not off the bottle already!" Even
though she had been in the same 12' X 12' room with me so many
times, she never realized I was nursing-and I had made no effort to
hide it.
