There was a drawing circulated at a major conference at about the same time,
showing the cross-cradle hold and describing all the problems they were
seeing with mothers who used it.

It was a great picture.  The mother is using a wrap-around nursing pillow,
placed very high.  Her elbow sticks straight out from her side.  The baby's
weight is taken entirely by the pillow, so there's undoubtedly a space
between baby and mom.  Mom's hand is on the back of the baby's head.  She's
holding her breast in a "C" despite the sideways orientation of the baby,
and she has lifted her breast to reach the too-high baby.  Yup, I'd agree.
That's no way to hold a baby.  But it doesn't have anything to do with it
being a "cross-cradle".
