Jennifer,
As a WIC Lactation Specialist I often heard this same story. I found it
helpful to be supportive and honest. I would tell the mother:
1) Of course I would be glad to help her realize this goal.
2) Question her plans for duration
3) Explain why exclusive pumping could mean a very short duration.
4) Ask about feelings/issues ... encourage her to at least "try" putting baby
to breast.
5) Reaffirm my commitment to help her reach her goal regardless of her
decision.
I also found it helpful to begin this ongoing discussion very early and to
encourage her to visit a local mother's group.
I hope this is helpful,
Laura
