Saw a sweet young mother in our hospital breastfeeding clinic
yesterday.(permission to post) Had been in emerg. the evening/night
before, milk stasis up to her armpits(day 2 post-partum). Was seen by
very busy emergency room doctor, very briefly, and mom felt she was
treated quite rudely. Discharge orders were, don't pump, may use ice
packs, ty#2 for pain relief, and an Rx for parlodel 2.5mg BID x 5
days.Aarrrgh!
The doctor told her that this would take away some of the milk and
relieve her pain.
Thankfully this mom decided not to fill this Rx, because she couldn't
get
a satisfactory answer about what it was really for. Was very angry when
I gave her some more info. We were able to pump off 10oz, and get baby
latched for a good 2oz feed. Needless to say, we have some major
educating to
do, and I have fired off an incident report to management. Just wanted
to vent
to people who would understand, Doreen Vanderstoep, RN, IBCLC
