We started (over 5 years ago) wearing street clothes and a lab
coat. I even got my lab coat embroidered with my name and IBCLC
(after several attempts-first time they put it as Ibclc like it was
a strange name or something!). We later decided to wear the same
scrubs that all personel (except docs making rounds) working on OB
wear. I continued to also wear my personal lab coat until I spilled
stuff on it that wouldn't wash out. Now they have changed the
guidelines and everyone except those that might have to go into the
OR must purchase their own clothing and if scrubs, it can't be the
same as OB scrubs. This means all the OB nurses (even post-partum
since they might be "baby nurse" for a C/S), NEs and techs can
continue to wear the hospital-provided OB scrubs. We had a choice
of wearing street clothes, the same scrubs or whatever that the rest
of the Women's Health Department (all outpatient) or scrubs we
choose and buy ourselves. We are choosing scrubs and scrub jackets
and have to have them "in place" by September first.

On another note regarding infection control - artificial nails have
been banned since July at our hospital for all personnel who have
any kind of patient contact because of the great potential for them
to be a source of infection.

Winnie
