Has anyone else said that Ameda and Medela claim that only their "hospital grade" pumps are for establishing a milk supply? I tell moms that the manufacturers claim only the "hospital grade" are for use in establishing a milk supply or for exclusive pumping and that is why I am recommending a rental to her.

At WIC, Ameda has told us the Elite is for use in the first four weeks, after that the Purely Yours is ok in certain situations (working for example, not a premie). I think we do not have enough research about the purchased pumps to be able to say with confidence that they are ok for exclusive pumping for all women or when mom needs to establish a milk supply for a hospitalized baby.

I want to give moms the correct information so I ask another question: if the higher end purchased pumps are similiar or the same as the Elite and the Lactina, how come the motors on those two look bigger, and the cycles are supposed to be faster? (Information from The Breastfeeding Answer Book, especially the last edition.) To my ear and eyes the motors on the Elite and Purely Yours sure seem different -- in size, sound, and MER response. Moms tell me they can feel a difference when pumping on each of these two.

Thanks, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
