I also wish they would have this on all forms. It wasn't even on the
one I filled in for my mammogram recently. When the technician was
going through my form with me, I commented on this and asked why they
didn't ask about breastfeeding history, both whether I was breastfed
or how long I had breastfed my babies. She said that it was because
it made no difference to breast cancer risk, and that she was really
supportive of breastfeeding (was currently a breastfeeding mum
herself in fact). I felt a trifle patronised actually but I know it
was not this technician's fault what is on the form.
I was quite shocked to be told that I am in a 'high-risk' category
for breast cancer, as I had a much-older half-sister (same father,
different mother) who died of breast cancer. However, I was breastfed
as a baby for 9 months and have breastfed my own 2 babies for a total
of over 4 years. I believe that this history counts for something. I
know for a fact that my half-sister did *not* breastfeed her
children, not sure about her being breastfed as a baby, but it was
after the early development of 'baby clinics' in Australia and I know
that the clinic nurses were keen on 'scientific' (read artificial)
feeding of babies.
