Kathy,
You asked about follow up phone calls and what to do if you leave a message
and then the mom doesn't call you back. I've occasionally had this happen and
I've handled it as follows: After leaving a message the first time with no
reply, I'll call again, stating something like, "Perhaps you didn't get my
message on Thurs, Nov 11. I would like to hear from you.... if again no phone
call, I've called a third time with a message something like this, "I hope
everything is all right, and I'm just concerned, so would appreciate hearing from
you so I know whether you'd like to continue working together..."
I've found that usually moms who don't call back have weaned and so at times
I've added, "it's ok if you've you've decided to stop breastfeeding but I
professionally need to know this..." or the like. I'm usually more wordy and
address the fact that new moms are busy, etc. Depending on the circumstances
and reasons for consult I may call back twice within a day if baby's at risk or
wait a day or two if it's a less acute problem. Occasionally moms who I've
seen and then had daily contact with and then asked them to call me don't call
and I find out everything is just fine.
