Dear Friends:
Diane Weissinger has brought the importance of language to our attention many
times. Remember her discussion of the hazards of artificial feeding instead
of the benefits of normal feeding? The language or vocabulary we use sends its
own message.
It is amazing, and often shocking, to flip breastfeeding benefit
statements around. "Artificially fed children have more..............." has way more
power than "Breastfed children have less..." 'Smoking kills' is an eye-opener;
'not smoking prevents death' is a cumbersome and confusing phrase.
Flip this one around. "Breastfeeding reduces fertility."
So then, artificial feeding does ........what?
warmly,
Nikki Lee
