While it's a nice idea to think of replacing the banked milk provided to the
family of the child that died, the newly donated milk would also cost the
milk bank money. Every donor has to be screened by questionaire and blood
work. There are costs involved in those activities. Then the milk has to
get to the milk bank. Shipping is costly, containers (if provided by the
bank) cost something. Then the milk has to be stored, pasteurized,
re-frozen while bacteriologic testing is done, and then finally the milk can
be released. The whole protocol of of storing, processing, and testing costs
more money. The staff that have to tend to these activities, the freezers
and the electricity, etc. all cost. Every oz of milk prob. costs around $5-6
to process. Most milk banks only charge about $2.75/oz. It's a losing
proposition on the money as it is, which is why donations and grants are
used to make up the difference in actual cost of producing and dispensing..
So it is not like offering more milk donations will re-coup for the milk
bank the money involved in providing the milk for the family of the child
that died. I wish that was how it worked.
