Donna, I haven't had a client take this -- or maybe I have and I've
forgotten, because I don't ever "reassure" anyone re: "safety" no matter what the med.
I simply pass on the exact reference(s) for the mom to discuss with her
physician or other type of primary provider. I will discuss relative risk if general
and specific references provide some info for that, and I will role-play some
questions she may want to go over with her doc, e.g. can baby be monitored
for potential liver and platelet concerns. I also may suggest she ask about
options to one med if other(s) with more research are available for a certain
condition. (Sometimes docs want to jump on the "newest and bestest" bandwagon when
a breakthrough pharmaceutical comes up, yet it may not be the best choice for
lactation due to inadequate research.) Since I don't have prescriptive
authority, reassuring re: safety really doesn't come under my particular scope of
practice as a healthcare professional.
Good luck.
Karen
