I'm just now going through some materials I picked up at the La Leche League
Conference and am truly appalled at this information. I picked up a handout
from the National Women's Health Information Center called "Frequently Asked
Questions About Breastfeeding." It's OK up to a point but I would like to know
if anyone knows who or where I can address some comments. Fellow Lactnetters
may be interested in the poor information and wish to make comments.
The bad info starts with the section: "If I decide to breastfeed, is
there a right way to do so?"
Right from the get-go, in tip number 1 - the bad information starts.....in
the month or so before delivery, you might also want to prepare you breasts and
nipples by daily application of natural moisturizes (like vitamin E oil and
Lanolin).
The next few are OK but in #3 when positioning and latch are discussed "talk
with a nurse or midwife for help." What no IBCLC recommendation? #7 is the one
that made me sit down to write this post: "Air dry your nipples. Right after
birth, until your nipples toughen, air dry them after each nursing to keep
them from cracking. Cracking can lead to infection. If your nipples do crack,
coat them with breast milk or other natural moisturizes (like vitamin E oil and
Lanolin) to help them heal. ARGGHHH. #8 is "watch for infection". #9 is
"Expect engorgement...to relieve engorgement, put warm wet washcloths on your
breasts and take warm baths to relieve the pain. If severe, placing ice packs on
your breasts between nursing may help. Talk to your health care provider if you
have problems." #10 "eat right and get enough rest....this will prevent breast
infections which are worsed by fatigue."
ICK. I would never give this information out as a handout, nor would I
recommend it as reading. Where can I write some suggestions?
