Dear Friends:
A mother called me for a consultation last night for a 7-week old baby.
Baby has been treated for reflux. I asked about her intake of cow's milk,
because there are several articles in JPGN that suggest ruling out intolerance to
cow's milk when reflux is suspected. (Cavataio et al. JPGN 2000;30: S36-44)
(Salvatore et al. JPGN 2002;110:972-984)
Her family of 3 (husband, her exclusively breastfed baby, and her)
receive 5 gallons (there are over 4 liters of fluid in a gallon) of cow's milk per
month as part of the WIC program! They drink it so it won't go bad.
She doesn't like milk all that much. I suggested she quit drinking it to
see how baby does. It will take at least 10 days to clear out of her milk.
warmly,
