Although we are not right on Nils Bergmans doorstep, Kangaroo Mother Care
is the norm in our NICU rather than the exception. We are about 500 km's
from Cape Town in a smaller setting, a 5 bedded NICU which usually
overflows to about 8 beds.  It is wonderful to see all the Moms kangarooing
their babies and chatting to each other, enjoying themselves and their
babies, the transition to breast follows so easily for these precious
premmies.  Follow up is intensive and we encourage the moms to continue to
maintain kangaroo care at home with good results.

I feel alot to has to do with the person who runs the unit and her
experience and knowledge regarding kangaroo mother care  this can make or
break the concept.  Nils Bergman has been the greatest inspiration to me
and my unit and I value everything he has taught on KMC.

Jean, I do hope that you can get Nils Bergman to run a workshop in the unit
you work in as he did with us about three years ago and the rewards are
unbelievable now.  All the staff are committed to KMC and it works, good
luck.
