In my "other" life I am a very part-time tour guide in Charleston, SC,
driving a carriage and giving a tour for an hour at a time. I have not
ever taken a baby with me on the carriage for the same reasons that I don't
drive a car with a baby on my lap. However, during the summer (when the
kids are out of school), Tom (the owner) strongly suggests (just short of
requires) that I bring along one of my children who can sit along on the
carriage quietly, every day. So, starting at 4, my kids all get to ride
with me at work. The tourists love it, the kids learn history, and Tom
gets to have kids around him. He would like me to sling Kevin (13 mo) and
drive the carriage, but cannot figure out a safe way to do it. Never once
have I been complained about for stopping for a minute to deal with my own
child and no one has made any derogatory remarks about
"professionalism." I think a lot of it depends on the attitude coming down
from the top. I look forward to the day when children of all ages are
included in our lives and allowed at work where it is safe.

Kevin (13mo)
