Beloved Listmembers,
Hearing health care providers, who should be better
educated, saying colostrum is insufficient for human
infants sometimes makes me want to knock them upside
the head, you know? (I *never would*, but frustration
takes over when I hear the same old misinformation
time and time again).

Basic logic: if human colostrum and milk were in any
way deficient, the human mammal WOULD HAVE DIED OFF
ALREADY (yeah, I'm yelling...many apologies). We
would have gone the way of the dinosaurs and be
extinct!

From a physiologic standpoint, colostrum is produced
at a rate of 30 to 100 cc *per 24 hours*. Newborn
stomach capacity is 5 to 15 cc. This is a little
slice of perfection, unless the infant stomach is
overdistended at an abnormally early stage by
improperly feeding artificial infant milk. Sometimes,
I will use a Volu-feed bottle and a medication cup
(filled with diluted AIM and water so it more
resembles breast milk) to illustrate these volumes to
parents. Visual aids can be very effective!

Just my rantings...
Carole Jernigan
