It always bugs me when psychologists and similar professionals cite
the fact that they have had patients who did such-and such and now
have problems so the such-and-such is a bad idea. Co-sleeping isn't
a guarantee that the child won't ever have any problems as he or she
grows. Some may wind up needing to see a psycholigist totally
unrelated to the fact that they co-slept as a baby/child! The
psychologist doesn't see any that co-slept and did not have any
problems later on because since they don't have problems they aren't
seeing the psycholosist. Duh!!!! It's like saying "I see a lot of
clients who eat spinach. Therefore, spinach led to their
problems." This completely ignores all the people who eat spinach
and never develop psychological problems. When one has a particular
mindset, one can always find examples of what they are looking for.
If you're looking for people wearing red, for example, you are
likely to see a lot more wearing red than anything else because
that's what you're noticing. If people believe that a certain
behavior causes problems, then they are going to notice the times
that behavior coincides with a problem whether there is a direct
connection or not.
OK, deep breath and off the soapbox!
Winnie
