And what a fabulous job it does of illustrating the incredibly positive
impact one supportive physician can be!
You made a difference! Congratulations!

Subject: A happy visit
I had a nice well-baby visit today which made my day. I have been out of
residency and in private practice for almost exactly 2 years. My very first
week in practice I saw a little jaundiced newborn whose mama was very
frustrated with breastfeeding due to sore nipples, sleepy baby, and fear
over the jaundice (not made better by my partner who suggested formula would
bring the bili down faster.) The first day I saw him, he had only been to
breast 1 time in the previous 24 hours, and had been receiving mostly
formula by bottle. Mom clearly wanted to nurse him, though, and I gave her
as much encouragement as I could. I saw her several times over the next 2
weeks as she transitioned back to full breastfeeding. I've enjoyed taking
care of him ever since.
Today, he was a happy toddler in my exam room for his 2 year check up, who
gleefully exclaimed "Num-nums!" when he figured out his mom and I were
discussing that he still nurses. Now, I gave mom support and some good
comebacks for her family who think she's nutty for nursing a 2 year old.
Despite the family pressure, she feels nursing has made taking care of a
toddler so much easier and is in no hurry to wean.
I always love when I get to see the long term results of helping someone
with a rough start to their nursing relationship!
