Do any of you also find it frustrating that an OB/GYN orders Mom not to
breastfeed? Usually if this happens it is a medication that is fine for nursing
the Dr. just isn't educated about it. But I would think they might right an
order to "Check with the Pediatrician" if they are worried about a medication.
It is so frustrating. We had a Mom in ICU. Mom's Dr. writes an order not to
nurse and to pump and dump. EEEEKK! The medication was FINE for nursing. It
was a seizure med, I am drawing a blank at the moment, this was last week.
The baby was a patient of our Neonatal team so I found the Nurse Practicioner,
she doubled checked the med and said the baby could nurse. But what a hassle
it was. She had to go to ICU and write an order on Mom's chart because the
nurses in ICU insisted the Mom dump her milk until the ARNP came and wrote the
order.
