Hi, Pat.

I have had moms tell me they have pumped clear milk. Since milk that sits in
the breast has its fat reabsorbed, I always figured it was possible that milk
that sat for an extended time (like behind a plug of some sort) could become
completely skim. But I figure it still must have some of the nutrients in it,
as evidenced by the substance that "settled" in the container.
I have also had a couple moms tell me they got "clear" liquid more
than once when they pumped. Although I can't truly explain it, I figure it still
has something to do with the fat getting reabsorbed from the foremilk, and
maybe they were only able to pump foremilk. I came to this conclusion because
with these moms, the baby had actually nursed between a couple of pumpings of
"clear" liquid, yet acted satisfied. So I figure the baby was probably able to
bring down hindmilk that had some fat in it, or else he wouldn't have been
satisfied. If not that, then maybe that clear milk has calories we can't
account for just by looking at it!
Anyway, I can't offer a definitive explanation, but I have heard of
this before.
