We have a population in SFlorida that is having gastric bypass and gastric
banding., I have recently had one patient who stated she wouldn't be
breastfeeding because she unable to sustain herself and an infant on the multiple small
feedings she takes in a 24 hr time slot....the other felt she could and would
be very conscious to continue her supplements and take more frequent feedings.
I referred her to our LC out of the hospital setting....Is anyone seeing more
of these mums and how are you approaching them. PS. the mum who chose not to
BF was warned over and over not to overfeed her infant...by 2 days of age she
insisted on giving the baby 3 oz. of formula...while my BF mom had a baby who
fed on demand and just liked to suck for 20 min. Our area is being saturated
with area hospitals having "by pass centers" so we are sure we will be seeing
more and more of these women.
