Parents often see the advertising about jarred baby foods and do not realize
that they often have water added. I have read somewhere that jarred foods may
be up to 40% water. In bfing classes I ask parents what would happen if they
add 40% water to the foods they eat. They often ask why water is added and I
tell them I guess it dates back to the era when babies were fed jarred foods as
early as 3 weeks and didn't have the physical ability to eat foods with more
bulk.I can remember babysitting in the 1960's and mothers would mix jarred
baby food with formula so the babies could drink their foods in a bottle. I
always thought it was so disgusting to drink food. And rember those baby food
bottles with the plunger? I would never use one of those when babysitting because I
was afraid of choking the baby. I just used a spoon. With my three children,
I never used a single jar of commercial baby food or cereal.
I often suggest sweet potatoes as a weaning food. It is high in nutients,
inexpensive, esy to prepare and taste good.
