I don't think it is necissarily the case as I have (had) severely
inverted nipples to the point that the maternity nurse told me I was
never going to succeed in breastfeeding. However when I started
pumping within a matter of days I pumped enough for twins (I only had
one, so I had to dump a lot of milk lateron). I know this is just one
example, but so is your mother...
It would be interesting to investigate into, but I think a lot of
moms with severely inverted nipples give up sooner because of mis-
information rather than giving it so much energy as the lady you
guided.
