I have done a quick web search for the term thanatophoric breast.
Thanatophorism means leading to death in Latin. I have found many sites
about Thanatophoric Dysplasia (a lethal form of dwarfism) but none that
included a connection to the breast. Only sites that list the specific
genes associated with Breast Cancer, Thanatophoric Dysplasia, and other
genetic conditions pop up; but the genes are not the same for these
disorders.
I wonder if (historically) these babies died due to their condition but it
was blamed on the breast. Or if the breast was dysplastic (excessively
small, underdeveloped) and not able to make sufficient milk.
A thorough review of historical writings may show that the babies suffered
from the syndrome, not that the mother's breast was the culprit.
Just a thought to get us thinking outside the box.
