hometown. We are starting very preliminary efforts to re-establish the human
milk bank here. This gives us some insight into how difficult the task will
be. We'll take letters to the editor from anywhere - after all, it's an
article about how our very scientists contributed to the world-wide

EDMONTON - Mother's milk is best, but babies who can't get it --
particularly those born weeks too soon -- owe a lot to a remarkable 18-year
collaboration between an Edmonton neonatologist and a University of Alberta
food scientist.

The pair -- Dr. John Van Aerde, now regional director for newborn services
with Capital Health, and Tom Clandinin, a professor of nutrition at the

U of A known to his associates as "Dr. Fatty Acid" -- found that two key
nutrients in human breast milk play a big role in brain and vision
development in infants. They do the same when added in the right proportions
to infant formula.

Infant formula sold around the world now includes the two fatty acids,
thanks to the ideas generated here and key clinical studies done here, said
Clandinin.

CRITICAL PERIOD

The nutrients -- two fatty acids called docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic
acid -- appear to be particularly important in the last trimester of
pregnancy and the early weeks of life.
