I just had to share my day. 3 1/2 yrs ago I made a special friend in my
nursing moms support group. She ended up with an emergency C-Section after
laboring for hours. Her baby wasn't at the breast for 14 hours. He was a terrible
nurser for a long while. She had every nipple problem under the sun,
including Raynaud's. She had terrible pain as a child playing in the cold. Even a
neurologist told her there was no such thing. I supported her through all of
this, finally at three months she was nursing without pain and enjoying her
baby. During all of this she had become depressed. She is a veterinarian and
felt she bonded better with her animals than her own child. After getting a
little help with Paxil for a while she finally felt together. She has always been
so grateful for my support. Today she had her 2nd C-Section (some of our
groups of OB/GYNs are NOT allowed to V-Bac a patient). I was with her and her
husband in the OR and Recovery room. I had the baby at the breast in 45
mintues! A true miracle at our hospital! And he was back at the breast again in 3
hours and then an hour and a half later. She was so happy. She is still
nursing her 3 1/2 yr old. I knew the staff would look at her as being too much
work (and a little "out there" with her thinking) in their busy day. I really
didn't want her to have a negative experience again. I feel good today. I just
wish all patients could have this experience. The staff is just too busy.
