Domperidone seems to be gaining favor because, compared to Reglan, it
causes fewer undesirable side effects. But I haven't seen anything
(except for one post in the Lactnet archives) comparing their
effectiveness as galactogogues. So my question is:
if a mother has already taken Reglan without much effect, what are the
chances that domperidone will be significantly more effective? Has
anyone had a mother's supply respond to one medications and not the other?
This website:
http://www.adhb.govt.nz/newborn/MedicalGuidelines/DomperidoneAndBreastFeeding.htm
discusses the slightly different mechanisms of these two drugs, but only
in terms of the differences in side effects, not *the* effect we're
concerned about.
While the mother in question has a prescription from her OB group, she's
a bit unnerved by the "under the counter" atmosphere of ordering
medications on-line. Before she proceeds, she'd like, not a guarantee,
but at least some assurance that there's a reasonable chance that her
experience with this drug will be different.
