Kathy,
As someone else posted on colostrum being like syrup or honey, I'd add with a
wide-eyed look and amazing intonation, "Isn't it wonderful (amazing) that
Mother Nature is so clever and makes colostrum so thick and creamy so baby,
who's learning to coordinate suck/swallow/breathe (after only having to
suck/swallow in utero) can have a substance that he can store for a minute
(few seconds) in the cup made by his tongue while he gets it together to
swallow then breathe!"
I use this line in my breastfeeding classes and see moms and dads have that
light bulb go off in their heads with understanding. I also take a medicine
cup and put water in it (colored Kayro syrup might show up better) up to 5
cc or so to demonstrate how little of this marvelous substance is needed per
feed and that always gets a "wow" from participants. A golf ball (mine's
orange) shows how big an infant's stomach is (and smaller) and then I say how
those 1-2 oz of formula (babies just have to have to tide them over)
stretches poor baby's stomach.
This whole demo takes maybe 2 minutes to present. And I must admit I learned
the theatrics from Chloe Fisher's video, "Coping with the First Week" because
the presenter in the film is a lovely, enthusiastic midwife who states at the
end how moms look at their growing babies and say, "I grew him, aren't I
clever." So thanks to Chloe and staff.
Hope this helps and throw around the word Mother Nature and species specific
milk and constant contact species; it's food for thought (no food for human
babies!)
