I appreciated Darillyn's comments on this topic. A few years back, while
teaching a basic breastfeeding class, I was being observed and reviewed by a
peer. After class she told me that I did a wonderful job, except for one thing.
That was teaching mothers' how to nurse discreetly. She felt that it implied
that breastfeeding needed to be hidden. As I told the mothers in class, I
firmly believe that we should be able to feed our children anywhere. But we
live in a society that has trouble with nursing nipples being exposed. I figure
if these mothers are comfortable nursing in public, they WILL nurse in public
and slowly we will change our society's aversion to it.
