Like most tinctures, this does have a high proportion of alcohol
(29-39% according to the label), but the recommended dosages are
drops, not ounces. Even if a mom drank an entire 2 oz (60 ml) bottle
in one gulp (at US$13.95, there are cheaper - not to mention
better-tasting - drinks available!), it would give her less alcohol
than in a glass of wine. And again, the normal dosages are much much
smaller, and taken in increments throughout the day rather than all
at once. I believe a 2-oz bottle will last most moms at least a week
or two.
Just for fun I calculated how much I personally would use if I took
the maximum dosage, 3 drops per 10 lbs of body weight every 2 hours.
For me, it works out to 0.67 ml (0.02 oz) of tincture every 2 hours
or 8 ml (0.27 oz) of tincture total in 24 hours. So at the max dose,
around the clock, I'd ingest a grand total of 1/10th of an ounce (3.1
ml) of alcohol per day. I bet I'd get more alcohol by adding a
splash of red wine to my tomato sauce.
The Motherlove website http://www.motherlove.com/prd_tinctures.html
says that if you are concerned about the alcohol, take the drops in a
cup of tea or hot water. The heat will cause some of the alcohol to
dissipate.
I have no financial interest in this product. It, and Motherlove's
other galactogogue tinctures, have reportedly been found effective by
moms I have worked with.
