I don't know about references, but  one of the members of our infant feeding team (a physical therapist) told me that she sometimes sees babies whose palates are extremely distorted from the effects of vacuum extraction. She says that it often takes a long time for the palate to "descend" back down into place. This certainly must have some effect on a baby's ability and desire to suck!
