I have met and talked at length with moms that were breastfed by relatives
(In Puerto Rico we call them "hermanos de leche" or "milk brothers" or more
commonly "hermanos de teta" - "titty brothers".) I have also and made
home visits here in California where a mom reported to me her cousin put
her baby to her very engorged breast to make things better. Her baby was
fed by the cousin (baby was 3 months old, newborn was 3 days old).

However - I have recently been asked as an IBCLC my opinion in the
following cases:

A foster mother wants to breastfeed a foster child.

An adoptive mother is offered milk by the surrogate mother who will
be delivering her baby.

What is your response? What are YOUR concerns?

The more mothers breastfeed, and the more common and well know the value of
breastfeeding (come on, National Ad Council!) the more we will be having to
address these issues.
