My first question would be-Is baby actually biting or are the teeth
irritating the areola with the normal action of nursing. If they
are lower teeth, they should be covered by baby's tongue. If they
are lower, then the latch isn't "right". If they are upper teeth, I
have seen a few where there was irritation even with effective
nursing. One mom put a large band-aid where the teeth were rubbing
(large enough that baby can't pull it into the mouth and "eat" it!)
and everything was fine.

If the baby is acutally "chomping" there are several things that may
help. First, baby cannot bite and nurse effectively at the same
time. If it is late in the feed, baby may be pretty much finished.
Moms can usually learn to spot when baby beging to get that "I'm
just about done" look and take baby off at that time. Breast
compression may keep baby nursing more effectively by increasing the
flow of milk. Keeping baby held in close so it is harder for baby
to slip towards the nipple and bite.

When the gums are tender, it is a natural instinct to bite down to
relieve the discomfort. Using a topical analgesic (teething lotion)
on baby's gums before nursing will reduce this if baby is biting
because of discomfort with the "next" teeth rather than the ones
that are already through the gums.

Hope this is of some help.

Winnie
