This is the kind of situation where I wouldn't use a pump mnayway, b/c colostrum is easier to express by hand. If all I wanted was to nurture the mom's confidence and she could not hand express a bit, I would show her how to express, using my own hands if need be to show her where to express to get the colostrum. I cannot remember that we ever did not see colostrum in this way, but it may have happened. It also leads to a great lesson about why baby needs to have a deep latch.
