I just want to add to Pamela Morrison's excellent post that Charles Isaacs
has done research on the destruction of enveloped viruses (HIV and CMV are
enveloped virues) being destroyed by freezing. He, among several other
"inventors" including William C. Heird (professor Baylor College of Medicine)
have a patent called "Antiviral & antibacterial activity of fatty acids." I
have to wonder why this information is not used to support breastfeeding in
HIV positive mothers. One might wonder why information/studies supportive of
breastfeeding are so readily jettisoned by health care policy makers. Of
course, I don't wonder any more. There seems to always be an economic
denominator under the veneer of "evidence-based" science.

"The above experiments with human milk, milk stomach contents, and purified
lipids show that MGs and fatty acids which are released from human milk
triglycerides either during storage or in the gastrointestinal tract kill
enveloped viruses and very likely serve an in vivo protective role in
breast-fed infants.
